What is a Diagnostic Radiographer ?

A Diagnostic Radiographers is responsible  for operating imaging equipment and caring for the patient during an examination . Depending on the examination concerned, they may work independently or under the direction of a Radiologist - a doctor specialising in the science of Radiology.

A Diagnostic Radiographer works predominantly within the Imaging Departments of Hospitals and Clinics. These may be NHS Trusts or Private facilities. Elsewhere in the world they may also be known as Medical Radiological Technicians or Radiation Technologists.

The Diagnostic Radiographer will hold a degree equivalent Professional qualification in Radiographic Imaging and be State Registered with the Health Professions Council.

Imaging Departments  may include a number of sub-departments covering a wide range of different imaging modalities e.g. X-ray, Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound, CT (Computerised Tomography), MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), Vascular Imaging, and Catheter Laboratories. Diagnostic Radiographers are able to undertake most investigations but may later specialise in one particular area.

Diagnostic Radiographers provide a service for most departments within the hospital including, Casualty, Wards, Outpatients and the Operating Theatres.
