He then spent 3 years as a Radiographer at the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St. Edmunds, prior to travelling to Australia for a Working Holiday. Whilst in Australia, Kevin worked at a variety of Hospitals, ranging from world renowned centres of excellence in the City to small single-handed posts in the rural outback. On returning to the UK, Kevin obtained a Senior Radiography position at Rush Green Hospital in Essex. Here he undertook his Ultrasound training, obtaining his Diploma in Medical Ultrasound in 1992. A succession of promotions whilst he was at Rush green eventually led to him becoming the Lead Superintendent of the Radiography Department. In the meantime, he expanded his ultrasound abilities to include not just Obstetrics, Gynaecological and Abdominal scans but also a full range of Vascular studies, Musculo-Skeletal scans and Paediatric Ultrasound. At the same time, Kevin maintained his General Radiography skills and worked in several hospitals in the area managing the Interventional Vascular studies. The formation of joint hospital Trusts, led eventually to the closure of Rush Green. During this drawn-out period, Kevin's responsibilities increased until he was eventually looking after the entire Hospital site. Through out this period, Kevin also had a variety of Locum posts, ensuring he experienced a full variety of examination techniques and Imaging Departments. He is a firm believer that maintaining skills can only be achieved by regular practice and that it is not in the patient interest for a practitioner to isolate themselves in one Department and not learn new techniques from their colleague. Whilst working as Superintendent at Rush Green, Kevin studied for and obtained his Diploma in Management Studies. Kevin then moved to a new post, Superintendent of Ultrasound at Newham Healthcare NHS Trust in East London. This position had been vacant for several months and instead of a staff of 6, Kevin arrived to find a staff of just 1 locum Sonographer, and a waiting list for routine ultrasound examination of 10 months. Over the next few years, he worked at increasing the staffing levels and reducing the waiting list. He also established a highly regarded Community Ultrasound Service, in which Sonographers took their ultrasound scanners out to General Practitioners Surgeries to perform lists. It was while managing the Ultrasound Service at Newham that Kevin met Zaffar Ahmed, Superintendent Sonographer at Guys & St Thomas' Hospitals NHS Trust, who he had brought in to perform evening sessions to help reduce the waiting list. Together they quickly realised that they were similarly unimpressed with the quality of service they had received, as Radiographers, Sonographers and Department Chiefs, from the Employment Agencies then providing Locum Staff. And so, from this frustration, and the belief that they could do better, 'SONOGRAPHERS Medical' was born. Back To SONOGRAPHERS Medical About Us Page. Read Zaffar Ahmed's Profile
